Our
Work

By maintaining strong relationships with elected officials and regulatory agencies, ALPMA ensures that the profession of podiatric medicine remains protected, respected, and properly integrated into the broader healthcare landscape. Their continued representation fosters progress in public policy that benefits both podiatric professionals and the patients they serve.

In May 2023, Alabama governor Kay Ivey signed SB28 into law, allowing Alabama podiatric surgeons to treat conditions of both the foot and ankle. Laws governing the scope of podiatric medicine have not been updated in Alabama since 1973, and this expansion into ankle care will allow podiatrists to treat a broader range of lower extremity issues, ensuring patients get better care more efficiently.

State Advocacy

The Alabama Podiatric Medical Association (ALPMA) lobbies for podiatrists and their patients in Montgomery. The ALPMA is active on all critical issues affecting podiatry and was the leader of our 2023 scope of practice increase which included the ankle. The ALPMA works with legislators and regulators to ensure that podiatrists are treated fairly based on their education and training.

Federal Advocacy

The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) is the only organization lobbying for podiatrists and their

patients on Capitol Hill. As the voice of podiatric medicine to your legislators and regulators, APMA is active on a

variety of critical issues affecting podiatry and the entire health-care system.

Every day APMA works with legislators and regulators to ensure that podiatrists are treated fairly based on their

education and training.

The APMA Legislative Advocacy department and Legislative Committee provide members with current

information about federal legislative advocacy issues.
